Chapter Eleven
The buzz on her phone woke Lauren. She stirred and took a moment to remember where she was. Luke’s bed. She stretched her arms overhead. Luke was already up. The smell of bacon drifted to the bedroom.
She reached for her phone to check the message, then scrambled upright. The message from Clint chilled her. Keep Laramie safe. She’s in danger.
Her hands shook. She pulled on her clothes and rushed outside with her purse to Luke.
“Good morning,” he said. His lips flattened in a thin line, the furrow in his brow shooting aches through her body.
She held up her phone. “Clint texted me. ‘Keep Laramie safe. She’s in danger.’”
He dropped the tomato. It rolled over the table and splattered to the ground. He set the knife on the table and turned off the grill.
“I’ll drive you to town.”
“No. No. I can’t leave my car.”
“I’ll follow you to town.”
“I’ll be fine, Luke.”
“No.”
“Yes. I have a gun. I know how to use it. I practice at the gun range believe it or not. I’ll be fine. You stay here.”
“She’s my daughter too.” His voice wrenched her soul apart. His jaw tightened as he glared at her.
“I know. But...”
He held up his hand to stop her, although she had no idea what to say.
“I’m sorry I can’t stay for breakfast.”
“Text me when you get home.”
She nodded. Her only concern was getting to Laramie. Did Clint mean his text as a threat or a warning? Was he trying to dissuade her from seeing Luke? If so, how would he know she was with Luke? Any message from Clint was a threat.
She called Laramie on her drive to Tiffany’s house, but she didn’t answer. Probably still asleep. Her daughter was never up before nine during the summer, and it wasn’t even eight yet. Lauren hadn’t had coffee or showered, and her clothes were rumpled. But she didn’t care.
Her phone buzzed. The speakers in the Ford read out the text from Clint. Didn’t mean to scare you. Just want you to be wary of Luke. He isn’t innocent.
Her stomach clenched. Was he watching her? Did he know she had been at Luke’s and now she was running to Laramie? She studied the road and each car that passed, but nobody followed her. The crime she dealt with in her job made her paranoid. It was easy for criminals to hide. But hopefully, eventually, they got caught.
She pulled her car in front of Tiffany’s and parked, urgency cramping her stomach. Was Susan awake? She unbuckled her seatbelt and sent a quick text. Susan was a stay-at-home mom who doted on her children. Tall and fit with sunny blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes, Susan and her husband were a power couple. Retired military, he was a commercial airline pilot and loved his job, but not more than his wife and kids. They had two other children besides Tiffany, ages eight and four. Lauren had always liked Susan, and their children had been friends since second grade.
While she waited for Susan to reply, she debated on whether to respond to Clint.
